    The topic of this open lecture is the role played by the open sea in the cultural imaginary in the West. Whereas the firm ground of the earth stands for stability, order, and continuity, the open sea represents risk, opportunity and possibility to create new social orders.

 

    The open sea also is seen as a means of communication, between people and of goods: it is a medium of trade, and hence a source of culture. But foremost the open sea stands in opposition to the firm ground of the earth.

 

    The talk will discuss in a not too serious way various dialectics between the open sea and the firm ground of the earth.
