I. Program Introduction


Peking University (PKU) has a long-standing history in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and was one of the first universities in China to launch postgraduate programs in this field. In 2007, it was among the first institutions approved to confer the Master degree of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL), holding a nationally leading disciplinary advantage in the field of international Chinese education. Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKU Shenzhen) is located in Shenzhen, a forefront city of China’s reform and opening-up. As the university’s only campus outside Beijing in mainland China, it boasts a beautiful environment and distinctive international characteristics.

PKU Shenzhen, in collaboration with The School of Chinese as a Second Language, offers the Master program of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages for international students. Commencing enrollment in 2026, this program adopts an integrated training model aligned with PKU main campus’s MTCSOL program. Leveraging a high starting point and extensive platform, it aims to cultivate Chinese language teachers competent for international Chinese education, as well as high-level Chinese language professionals engaged in various cross-cultural language and cultural exchange activities.


II. Program Objectives


The program aims to cultivate specialized talents who understand China and Chinese culture, possess solid knowledge of written and oral Chinese, demonstrate proficient language teaching skills and intercultural communication competence, and thus are qualified for Chinese language teaching tasks.

IV. Graduation and degree awarding


Students who have completed all required courses and passed their thesis defense will be awarded master’s graduation and degree certificates by Peking University according to the Peking University Charter.


V. Application Eligibility


Applicants must meet all the following requirements simultaneously:

1. Non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport. Residents of the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan who have emigrated to other countries and are applying to Peking University as international students must present valid passport or citizenship documents dating from before April 30, 2020, along with proof of cancellation of Chinese nationality.

Note: The exit and entry administration authority of the public security organ of China reserves the right to judge whether an applicant still has Chinese nationality. If an applicant is found to hold Chinese nationality during the application, admission, or after enrollment, their application, admission, enrollment, or student status will be nullified.

2. Applicants should be in good physical and mental health, of good character, with no criminal record, and willing to abide by Chinese laws, regulations, and university rules and regulations.

3. Applicants for master’s degree programs should hold a bachelor’s degree or above from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China.

4. Applicant’s academic performance and language proficiency must meet the admission requirements of this program.

VII. Required Application Materials


Visit the International Student Service System (http://www.studyatpku.com), fill in the application and upload the following materials:

1. Degree diplomas in Chinese or English and the degree authentication issued by Ministry of Education of China. For degree diplomas in other languages, applicants are required to upload both the original copy and a notarized copy in Chinese or English. Degree diplomas awarded by overseas universities must be authenticated by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSCSE). Degree diplomas awarded by universities on the Chinese mainland must be authenticated by the Center for Student Services and Development, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSSD).

Note: Applicants who graduated before 2026 must upload their degree authentication report at the time of application. Applicants expected to graduate in 2026 must provide an official letter from their current university stating their expected graduation date and submit their certificate of graduation before enrollment.

2. Official transcripts. Original or notarized transcripts from the awarding institution(s), in Chinese or English.

3. A personal statement in the language of instruction of the applied program. It should briefly introduce applicant’s academic background and focus on the proposed research plan, approximately 1500 words. 5. Two recommendation letters from professor(s), associate professor(s) or experts with equivalent academic titles in the field of the applied program, in Chinese or English. Recommenders will receive a system-generated email after the applicant submits the recommendation request and can complete the online recommendation or upload a scanned copy of the signed recommendation letter following the system instructions. 6. Original Chinese Language Proficiency Test Score Report meeting the following standards or other proof of Chinese proficiency.


Program HSK Writing (Composition)
MTCSOL HSK Level 6, Score ≥ 210 Score ≥ 65


Note: Applicants who have taken the new HSK Levels 7-9 may submit the corresponding qualified score report. If the score report is not yet available at the time of application, you may upload the HSK Level 6 test admission ticket and other proof of Chinese proficiency. Applicants who pass the initial review must submit the qualified HSK Level 6 score report before the re-examination.

7. A copy of the passport photo page. The passport must be an ordinary passport valid for at least three months after the intended enrollment date.

8. Catalogue and abstracts of published academic articles, other original research achievements, etc. (Provide if available).

Applicants should scan the original or notarized application documents in color using a scanner. Images captured by mobile phone or camera are NOT acceptable.


VIII. Application Fee


The application fee is ¥800 RMB. Applicants must pay the fee online (via the payment prompt in the International Student Service System http://www.studyatpku.com) before the application deadline. Only RMB payment is accepted; other currencies and traveler’s checks are not accepted. The application fee is non-refundable. Incomplete applications or applications without successful payment will not be processed.


IX. Initial Review


The International Student Division will conduct an initial review of applicant eligibility. Application materials of those who pass the initial review will be forwarded to the School of Chinese as a Second Language. The School’s Admission Group will organize experts to review the applicant’s past academic performance, academic foundation, and potential. A shortlist of candidates for the re-examination will be drawn up for the next step of examination.


X. Re-examination


The re-examination is scheduled from April to May 2026. The formats, requirements, and schedules will be notified later in the school website. The School of Chinese as a Second Language will organize an expert panel to conduct a comprehensive assessment of candidates’ academic competence, research capability, language proficiency, innovative spirit, and overall quality. Panel members will score independently on-site.


XI. Admission


1. The university will determine the preliminary admission list based on the initial review of application materials, re-examination results, and the school’s proposed admission list.

2. The preliminary admission list will be posted by the school before the end of May. Applicants should pay close attention to the latest related notice of the school.

3. The pre-admitted candidates should download, print, and send (or mail) the original application form and original copies of other application materials (except the degree certificate and recommendation letters) to the International Student Division of Peking University by May 31, 2026.

4. The International Student Division will confirm and notify students of the admission results, and admission documents will be issued starting from late June 2026.


XII. Enrollment


Admitted students are expected to register in August 2026 (specific date as per the Admission Notice) at the Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School Campus, with their passport, valid student visa for China, and the Admission Notice. Upon enrollment, admitted students must present their original degree certificate for verification of enrollment eligibility. Applicants who obtained their degree from an overseas institution must also submit the original degree certification report from the Chinese Ministry of Education’s Service Center for Scholarly Exchange. Those who fail to meet the enrollment requirements will have their admission nullified.


XIII. Tuition and Scholarships


1. Tuition: ¥78,000 RMB for the entire 2-year program.

2. Scholarships: Incoming international students may apply for the following three types of scholarships:

(2) Guangdong Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students in Guangdong (Study Location: Shenzhen): ¥20,000 RMB per student.

(3) Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School Special Scholarship for International Students.

XIV. Visa, Medical Insurance, and Accommodation


Admitted students must apply for a student visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate in their home country with the Admission Notice and the Visa Application for Study in China (JW201/202 Form). Those studying for more than 6 months must apply for an X1 visa, which must be changed to a residence permit for study purposes within 30 days of arrival in China.

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education of China, all international students in China must purchase medical insurance within China. Students who fail to purchase the required insurance will not be allowed to register.

Accommodation is arranged by the Shenzhen Graduate School. The accommodation fee for non-scholarship students varies depending on the specific room type (e.g., single room on Shenzhen campus costs approximately ¥15,840 RMB per year). International students living off-campus must register at the local police station within 24 hours of moving into their rented accommodation.
